Park should show the good, bad and ugly

Freedom Park, which is expected to cost taxpayers about R715million, should reflect South Africa's diverse history.

Freedom Park, which is expected to cost taxpayers about R715million, should reflect South Africa's diverse history.

Wally Serote, the head of the park, should say if it will also reflect the harshness of ANC training camps abroad.

The ANC's own Skweyiya report on abuses at its Quattro camp in Angola [reveals] that ANC comrades were beaten, locked in cages, tortured and even killed.

The report mentions further that women were treated "sex objects" who "could not develop militarily or politically".

This park has opened a can of worms that can only be contained if the historical facts indicate that throughout South Africa's history there have been the good, bad and ugly - on all sides.

Disclosure should be inclusive. We must never attempt to engineer history lest we fall into the trap of repeating it.
