Athletes from Nell Mtsweni's Ikhaya Athletics Club want to stamp their authority on Mpumalanga races, starting with the Sasol-Secunda Marathon on Saturday.

Mtsweni said: "The athletes have been training hard and are motivated to start the year on a high note by winning races. We want to win something in all races that we take part in."

Ikhaya was established last December by the former Harmony Club athlete.

Mtweni's club will be taking part in a formal race for the first time. Mtsweni said he was banking on Dennis Mhlanga (10km) and Oupa Maseko (21,1km) to win something for the club.

"These two are young and energetic. They can be a force to be reckoned with if they can continue working hard and remain level- headed," he said.

The Sasol-Secunda Marathon comprises three categories: 42,1km, 21,1km and the 10km.

Frank Wright, the organiser, said: "The 42,1km and 21,1km races will start at 6am, while the 10km will start an hour later at the Secunda recreational centre."
