Five athletes who come out tops in the finals of the national Cadbury Schools Games in September will be awarded track and field bursaries.
The five athletes will get training from the top qualified South African trainers in that field.
This was announced yesterday at the launch of the inaugural event at Johannesburg Stadium that is open to high school pupils nationally.
Boys and girls in the 14 to 16 age group will be eligible for the tournament.
The initiative was started by the ministries of sports and recreation, and Education.
It is financed by Cadbury South Africa.
The Games is part of the government's five-year plan to bring physical education back into the school curriculum.
Participants will compete in track and field tournaments and the strict qualifying standards set by School Athletics Africa to ensure a quality event will apply.
School trials start this month and culminate in the finals at Sasolburg in September, where 500 selected athletes will battle it out for glory.
