The Machado Toll Plaza on Mpumalanga's N4 could be going places.

Where exactly, nobody knows. But the toll gate between Belfast and Nelspruit is so busy that Trans African Concessions (Trac) wants to move it.

Arthur Coy, chief executive of Trac, the company that develops, maintains and rehabilitates the N4 from Pretoria to Maputo, says the company will decided the toll's new location before July.

He says environmental consultants from the UK are undertaking a full impact study to determine the feasibility of actually moving the plaza.

"A preliminary report will be available in the next few weeks," Coy says.

Meanwhile, the rehabilitation of the road between Machadadorp and Belfast is under way and motorists are advised that stop-go sections can be expected.

Coy says the takings from the toll tariffs are used for maintenance work and for paying back a company start-up loan.
