Model justice

Police deserve praise for the swift arrest of the two suspects accused of murdering historian David Rattray a fortnight ago.

Police deserve praise for the swift arrest of the two suspects accused of murdering historian David Rattray a fortnight ago.

Especially commendable is the speed with which the wheels of justice moved to prosecute one of the suspects, Fete Nkwanyana. He was yesterday sentenced by Judge Jan Hugo to an effective 25 years imprisonment for his involvement in Rattray's murder, after confessing to police and naming all the other suspects involved in the incident.

That the judge has ordered that Nkwanyana should not be eligible for parole before he has completed 18 years of his sentence is commendable too.

If the energy put into solving this murder was replicated throughout the criminal justice system, criminals would soon feel the heat and run scared.

A tough parole system and well-oiled wheels of justice are the answer to crime woes.
