Proteas run riot over Pakis

South Africa completed an emphatic 164-run victory in the opening one-day international against Pakistan at SuperSport Park in Centurion yesterday.

Skipper Graeme Smith hit six fours off Rana Naved-ul-Hasan in an over costing 27 runs and raced to 72 off 47 balls.

Jacques Kallis (88) hit three sixes in an over from Naved, who conceded 92 from eight overs, and shared 128 in only 10,2 overs with Mark Boucher (78).

In reply to a formidable 392 for 6, Pakistan were reduced to 125 for 9 inside 20 overs, and only Shoaib Malik passed 50.

Five Pakistan batsmen hit sixes, but only number 10 Mohammad Sami offered genuine support to Malik, though the ninth wicket stand of 73 was largely academic by then.

The top seven all reached double figures, but only the prolific Mohammad Yousuf threatened a major score, with three fours and a six in one over from Kallis in his 39 from 25 balls.

Smith raced to his 21st one-day international half-century

But advancing down the wicket to Mohammad Hafeez, he mistimed a drive, and was stumped by Kamran Akmal. - BBC
