An off-duty policeman killed himself in his garage at Amajuba Park in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, on Thursday.

Inspector Velaphi, Shabangu, 49, who was based at Madadeni police station, allegedly shot himself after a man driving his car told him that he had accidentally crashed the vehicle.

It is alleged that Shabangu first tried to hang himself from the roof of his garage, but he did not succeed.

Shabangu then shot himself while standing on a chair. He died at the scene.

Shabangu's eldest daughter, Zandile, 23, said: "He loved his family very much. We never thought such a bad thing could happen.

"It's a sad time for us. But we have no problem with the driver because it was God's will."

Shabangu's wife of 16 years, Dorothy, said Shabangu had been a good husband.

"He loved me and his children. I never thought that our marriage would end like this," she said.

She said she did not blame the driver.

"God has a plan for us all. It could have happened to anyone. I think the call from the driver made him very nervous because he had cancelled the insurance on his car," she said.

Police spokesman, Captain Shooz Magudulela, said the police had opened an inquest.
