Philemon Thabethe of Barberton in Mpumalanga went to sleep in his room after a drinking spree with his friends.
Police spokesman Constable Jabulile Ndubane said Thabethe's wife, who was visiting a neighbour, came home to find one of their two shacks in flames.
"When firefighters and police arrived at the scene the man was already burnt beyond recognition," said Ndubane. - Sakhile Mokoena
