Live wires hamper rescue effort

Durban paramedics had to work around live electrical cables to free a man who had crashed into a light pole, an ER24 spokesman said yesterday.

Durban paramedics had to work around live electrical cables to free a man who had crashed into a light pole, an ER24 spokesman said yesterday.

The driver of a delivery truck had lost control of his vehicle in Umbilo Road, Glenwood, and slammed into the pole downing electrical cables, Neil Noble said.

The driver sustained severe head and chest injuries and a fractured left leg and was placed on a ventilator at the scene. The jaws of life were used to free him from the wreck.

"It was an extremely delicate situation as paramedics worked around the live electrical cables, risking their lives to save him," Noble said.

The man was taken to Entabeni Hospital's intensive care unit in a serious condition. - Sapa
