Villagers in Nsavulani, outside Giyani, watched helplessly as a hippopotamus trampled a woman to death at the weekend.

Mopani district police spokesman, Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe, said Anna Mathebula, 45, had gone fishing with other villagers near the Kruger National Park when the animal attacked her.

He said the hippo pushed her and when she fell down, it bit her and trampled her.

He said the villagers took Mathebula to the local clinic, but she was certified dead on arrival.

Ngoepe said: "We want to warn villagers not to go to dangerous places."

He said the village was notorious for animals straying there from the Kruger National Park. - Frank Maponya
