Nine members of a gang that terrorised residents of the elite suburb of Fort Gale in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, between November and December last year are behind bars.

Investigating officer Mandla Ndabeni said four other members are still at large.

The gang members waylaid and pounced on their victims as they drove into their homes. Retired businessman Sisa Bam was robbed of imported liqueurs and household goods worth about R15000 .

Three medical practitioners were also victims of the gang. Mkhuseli Mashiya, was robbed of R2000 in cash and household goods worth about R10000, Wilmot Nogaga was robbed of goods worth R60000 and Nkululeko Xobololo had his house broken into and goods worth about R20000 stolen.

A Ngqeleni businessman, Mpumelelo Mshuqwana was robbed off goods worth about R30000 at his house.

Ndabeni said police investigations have revealed that two vehicles were used in the robberies. He said the suspects were arrested at a tavern in KwaMpuku a week ago.

"They arrived at the tavern with very expensive liqueurs and asked for glasses to drink. Someone at the tavern became suspicious and phoned the police," said Ndabeni.

The suspects have been remanded in custody and they will appear again in court on February 15.
