A Durban man was beaten up by bar patrons yesterday morning after he tried to rob them with a toy firearm, ER24 paramedics' spokesman Nick Noble said.

The man had drawn the firearm in the crowded bar in Umbilo Road and had almost succeeded in the robbery when one of the patrons saw that the gun was not real.

The crowd set upon him, chasing him into the street and beating him.

Police intervened and called paramedics to treat the facial injuries and broken nose he sustained.

Noble said the man later jokingly pretended to shoot himself with the firearm and begged police to let him go, but he was duly led off to the police van. - Sapa
