Wits, UJ to join forces

Wits University and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) have agreed to collaborate on projects to develop Johannesburg and Gauteng, a spokesman for the universities said yesterday.

Wits University and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) have agreed to collaborate on projects to develop Johannesburg and Gauteng, a spokesman for the universities said yesterday.

"This, among other ventures, includes joint endeavours focusing on the development of infrastructure and transport systems in the run up to the 2010 Soccer World Cup," Shirona Patel said.

A memorandum of understanding was signed on Tuesday by the two universities' vice-chancellors, Loyiso Nongxa of Wits and Ihron Rensburg of UJ.

The institutions will join forces in areas such as education, engineering, languages, optometry and biotechnology.

The collaboration is the first in the history of the two universities. - Sapa
