Police in Musina, Limpopo, have adopted nine street children and registered them at primary schools in the area.

Five of the children are from Zimbabwe and four are orphans from Musina whom the police found in the streets earlier this month.

The police station's commissioner, Superintendent Maggie Mathebula, said yesterday that the hardships the youngsters had endured prompted the police to help them gain admission to school.

"Early in January we took the Zimbabwean boys back to their country more than five times, but each time they came back.

"We are afraid that they might end up being killed, so we decided to enroll all nine of them at local primary schools," Mathebula said.

The children are living in a compound and are being supported from the police station's budget.

Mathebula said the Musina municipality had given R8000 to help the children to get school uniforms and other basic needs.

"We intend to help them until they go to tertiary institutions," she said. "They are coping well in their classes."
