Six senior officials were suspended after a recommendation by the board of directors of Lepelle Northern Water (LNW).

The parastatal is responsible for bulk water supply in Limpopo.

An audit report allegedly uncovered a range of corrupt activities and misconduct among the officials.

Board chairman Motalane Monakedi said yesterday that the six officials had been suspended "pending the outcome of the cases against them", but that two of them have since resigned from their positions.

He identified the two as Ngoako Sekgololo, who worked as chief financial officer, and Norman Mnisi, who was acting technical manager.

Monakedi said the board, which came into operation in November, had accepted the officials' resignations and that those suspended would be dealt with "in the most appropriate way".

Monakedi, who is also the executive mayor of the Capricorn District Municipality, would only say preliminary investigations had shown that the officials were not conducting their business properly.

He said an audit report was released in December, the recommendations of which were implemented this month.

"We felt it would be in the best interest of the LNW to suspend the officials while an investigation is ongoing. Those suspended will be given a fair chance to present their case," Monakedi said.

An official at the LNW who spoke on condition of anonymity said they "saw the suspensions coming" based on the corrupt activities the officials were engaged in, but refused to shed more light on the officials' activities.
