KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Ina Cronje yesterday visited a school divided by religion during a trip to schools in the Amajuba district.
At Newcastle High School, Cronje sat in on a natural science class and had a closed-door meeting with the school's governing body.
Last year tensions erupted between Muslim and Christian parents over the morning-assembly prayer at the school. Muslim parents accused school principal Jan du Toit of giving preference to Christian prayers.
A source at the school told Sowetan that the MEC's visit would bring peace between the parents.
"This situation can tamper with the culture of learning and teaching in the school, which accommodates pupils of different religions," he said.
Cronje also visited farm schools reportedly closed by farmers who were demanding a meeting with the education authorities.
