Mpumalanga police are taking no chances with alleged wife killer and bail-breaker Doctor Makaringe.
The former high-flying socialite from Kumani village, near Thulamahashe, is accused of shooting his wife, Sbongile Mabaso, 31, in 2000. He skipped his R5000 bail in 2003.
Makaringe was rearrested last week and is being held in the Mhala police cells.
At the weekend he said he was ill and demanded that Senior Superintendent Khazamula Baloyi bring him medication.
Baloyi told him it was against the law for the police to give a prisoner pills, but said he would arrange for Makaringe to be taken to the Thulamahashe health centre.
But when police put the former fugitive in leg-irons, Makaringe said he was no longer sick.
Police spokesman Robert Makhubele yesterday said: "We can't take a chance with such a suspect . The sickness might have been his latest trick to escape."
He said Makaringe asked the police to spare his dignity and remove the leg irons, apparently because those who knew of his high standard of living would mock him if they saw him manacled.
He was taken to the health centre in leg irons and was "very ashamed because many people who knew him were there too".
