Tensions are running high between the police and the people of Mphela township in Kokstad, in southern KwaZulu-Natal.

A student cop allegedly shot and killed a local resident, Zamalek Mboniswa, 36, on Friday night after an argument.

Yesterday the community threatened to march on the Kokstad police station and to avenge the death of their neighbour and friend.

Nosipho Mofoka said she and her neighbours had asked the young policeman to help them stop Mboniswa from hitting his girlfriend.

Mofoka said they were about to go to the police station when they saw a police vehicle driving by and asked the policeman for help.

"At first he refused, but then he came back, running, with a gun in his hand," said Mofoka.

Mboniswa closed the gate after exchanging harsh words with the policeman, who was trying to get into his yard," she said.

"My two-year-old child, Athi, was standing next to Mboniswa at the gate when I heard a gunshot," she said.

"My child was covered in blood. I thought he had been shot, but it was Mboniswa's blood splattered on him. Mboniswa tried to run but he collapsed."
