An Mpumalanga man accused of attacking his mother with a spade on Sunday, slashing her arm and stomach, has been arrested.

His is said to have assaulted his mother because she owed him R200.

The man, whose identity is known to Sowetan but which cannot be revealed until after his appearance in the Mhala magistrates' court today, was arrested at his home at Kumani village, near Thulamahashe, yesterday.

The victim, Lizzy Gumbe, 78, also from Kumani village, was taken to the Thulamahashe health centre for treatment and then to Mapulaneng Hospital.

"I think my son is mentally disabled.

" I don't believe anyone with a sane mind could do what he did to me," Gumbe said.

"I don't believe that if I owed him money he could try to kill me for just that," she said.

She said she would ask the police to take her son to a psychiatric hospital when she is discharged from Mapulaneng.

The police have charged the man with attempted murder.
