A member of a North West school's governing body was granted R500 bail in the Mmabatho magistrates' court yesterday. She was charged with common assault after she allegedly forced an 11-year-old girl to eat human faeces.

Busisiwe Mlambo is also alleged to have forced another child, a four-year-old, to clean excrement off the wall of a toilet at Dihatshwana Primary School in Dihatshwana village, near Mmabatho in the North West.

The incident allegedly happened when Mlambo accused the children of defecating outside the teachers' toilet. She then allegedly forced them to eat the faeces.

Poppy Mooketsi, 31, became suspicious when her daughter would not eat supper. She was told what happened and took her child to hospital where a doctor confirmed that the child had consumed human faeces.

The chairman of the school's governing body, Johanna Semelani, claimed the child had made up the story.

"Children in this village always lie about teachers and about us.

"I know that Mlambo had ordered the child to put the faeces in the toilet pit, and gave her a box that she used to collect the faeces," Semelani said.

She dismissed the four-year-old's accusations as "a pure lie".

"The truth is the children of this village do not want to keep themselves clean," said Semelani.

Mlambo's trial was postponed to March 16 for further investigation.
