Give it a rest

After all is said and done, we ought to let the row over the slaughtering of a bull at former ANC chief whip Tony Yengeni's recent homecoming ceremony rest.

After all is said and done, we ought to let the row over the slaughtering of a bull at former ANC chief whip Tony Yengeni's recent homecoming ceremony rest.

In fact there was no need to turn an age-old ritual into a public spectacle in the first place, thus needlessly raising temperatures among sections of the South African public.

So the latest utterances by Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana are not helpful at all. His challenge to the SPCA, which earlier objected to the spearing of the bull before it was slaughtered at the Yengeni home, to attend another ceremony during which a cow would be slaughtered is - at best - posturing.

He would do well to spare us the vivid tales of "slaughtering a cow without anaesthetising" it, or it making the beast bellow to high heavens.

Ironically such histrionics serve only to trivialise rather than lend dignity to the practice.
