A man who had been on the run for four years after skipping bail for the murder of his wife is finally behind bars.

The police were following a tip-off when they caught Doctor Makaringe, 41, in Mpumalanga last week.

Makaringe, of Merry People Stream, near Thulamahashe in Bushbuckridge, fled shortly before he was to appear in court in 2003.

Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe said yesterday they had got a tip-off that he was in Carolina, and they arrested him early on Thursday morning.

Makaringe allegedly shot dead his wife, Sbongile Mabaso, 30, at her parents' home at Ludlow Village, Mpumalanga, after accusing her of having an extramarital affair.

At the time he worked as a representative for an insurance company in Giyani.

His friends described him as a friendly person who "played big in a small town". One friend said Makaringe had a passion for fast cars, which he often hired.

Makaringe appeared in the Mhala magistrates' court on Friday. His next court appearance will be on February 26.
