A taxi drivers' planned protest march came to nothing yesterday when police stopped them from entering Nelson Mandela Bay.
About 100 protesting Border Alliance Taxi Association (Bata) taxi drivers then barricaded the road to Njoli Square taxi rank in KwaZakhele.
They could not hand over a petition of demand in town because they had not followed the right procedure to allow a legal protest.
The drivers want their traffic fines to be written off and their warrants of arrest to be rescinded.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is owed more than R20million in outstanding traffic fines.
It is also dealing with about 25000 outstanding warrants of arrest.
Municipal safety and security head Howard Hans warned motorists with outstanding fines to pay them or face the consequences.
He said a project to trace the offenders would kick off soon. He said that taxi drivers seemed to dominate the list of outstanding traffic fines and warrants of arrest.
Howard said tracing offenders was proving to be tough because people kept moving from house to house, but were not updating their addresses.
Police spokesman Captain Ernest Sigobe said the taxi drivers were saying "enough is enough".
