Captain Mamotsiri Tladi died in a pool of blood outside the Vosloorus police station where she was stationed in 2004. She had been shot twice in the head.

The state alleged in the Johannesburg high court yesterday that Oliphant Oupa Lethebe, a superintendent with the Ekurhuleni metro police, gunned down his former common-law wife, before he shot himself in the face.

He survived and was arrested for Tladi's murder.

Lethebe, 42, who has been suspended without pay, yesterday asked the court to release him on bail so he could take care of his four children and "sort out" his salary issues with his employer.

Judge George Maluleke refused the application.
