An estimated 3 000 runners from across Gauteng and neighbouring provinces are expected to pound the streets of Diepkloof, Soweto, in a bid to win the yearly Diepkloof Half- Marathon on March 3.

Stanley Itshegetseng, media liaison officer of the event, said they have established a Local Organising Committee to run the day-to-day affairs relating to the event, which will also include a 10km road race.

"Everything is going according to plan. We have sent out invitations to all the schools in Diepkloof and the surrounding areas.

"The Diepkloof Athletics Club strongly believes in the development of our youth, that is why our plan for this event is to attract as many schoolchildren as possible, irrespective of where they come from."

It will be the first time that the club introduces a half-marathon after staging the 15km road race and the 5km fun run in the past. Last year's 15km race was won by Shadrack Hoff and Poppy Mlambo.

"We expect top runners such as the Phalula twins, Lebo and Lebohang, Tshamano Setone as well as Violet Raseboya. Now that we have introduced a 10km road race, they will use it to sharpen themselves up for the Southern Africa cross-country championships."

The outspoken Itshegetseng, a former head of the Gauteng Athletics Academy, added that they were still in search of a sponsorship for their event, which has been taking place for 23 years.

"In the 24-year history of the club's existence, it was only in 2005 that we did not manage to get sponsorship," he said.
