Members of the Cushian Church of the Republic of South Africa recently celebrated their 45th anniversary in style in Zola, Soweto.
Mthunzi Mtshali, the church's secretary, said the church was established in 1963 at the height of political unrest MG Sishuba and other society stewards.
"The church was established to preach the word and also preserve the African culture," said Mtshali.
"We have come a long way. We are celebrating the church's achievement through these years. We are also celebrating the birth of democracy in our country and the sustenance of our cultures as black people."
Mtshali said the church was now fighting new battles.
"We are now teaching black people not to look down on themselves.
"We are faced with new challenges such as the fight against HIV-Aids and the upliftment of the country's economy," he said.
