Scared farmworkers near where a farm manager was killed will leave the area because they believe neighbouring farmers will attack them.

The situation was tense at New Venture Farm in Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal, yesterday, three weeks after Kenneth Lionel Eva was killed by more than 250 people over a land dispute. People expressed concern about their safety and said they would leave because they feared the farmers.

S'bahle Gumede, chairman of the local development committee, said: "We're scared. One farmer has threatened to avenge Eva's killing."

The farmer reportedly said he would only re-employ workers he had fired after suspects had been arrested.
