A security guard was seriously injured in an explosion at an ATM in Meyerton early yesterday morning.

Vaal Rand police spokesman Captain William Mcera said an all-night security guard at the NTN shopping centre called for back-up when he became suspicious of four men who were fiddling with an ATM.

He saw them putting a bag down next to the Standard Bank's ATM.

The men then drove away in the latest model Toyota Corolla.

The guard alerted his control room, which responded by sending additional security personnel.

When the back-up arrived, one of the men went to look at what was in the bag and that is when it exploded.

Mark Stokoe of Netcare 911 said: "One guard suffered serious facial injuries and lacerations. He was also bleeding profusely from the nose and there is a lot of generalised pain to the right side of his body."

The ATM was extensively damaged. Police are investigating the cause of the blast and a case of malicious damage to property. - Sapa
