Droves of township children hoping to register at former Model C schools in

Attracted to these schools because of their high matric pass rates, many of them could find themselves without schools after being turned away.

Peter Manser, the principal of Alexander Road High School in Newton Park, said: "The first week of official reopening was very difficult, seeing parents from all over begging and crying for acceptance of their children."

He said his school did its best to accommodate children who met the admission requirements.

Provincial Education Department spokesman Loyiso Pulumani said the department was dealing with the increasing demand for registration at former Model C schools.

He urged parents to consult the district director of education who could instruct principals to accommodate the children.
