Deaf people will, in future, be able to open cases with the police without any language difficulties.

This follows a plan to train police in the use of sign language.

DeafSA has welcomed the Tshwane sign language centre and interpreting service for availing their services to the police.

In their quest to improve service delivery at various police stations, the centre will present courses to policemen for free.

Groovy Mpiyonke of DeafSA in Mpumalanga said : "We welcome this initiative and encourage other stakeholders to follow this example.

"This is long overdue and we're glad for the deaf that this is finally happening."

Police spokesman Superintendent Caron Calteaux said the exercise was in line with the Batho Pele campaign.

Calteaux said: "Our community centres will now be able to help deaf people in their own language."
