A top financial institution yesterday awarded 167 tertiary students bursaries worth more than R5million.

Derek Carstens, chairman of the FNB fund, said: "We are involved with education from pre- school through to high school and ultimately university."

The fund provides finance to broaden access to tertiary education for previously disadvantaged and academically competent students.

"We place students in education centres of excellence and provide them with additional training and focused mentoring for each individual so they can reach their potential," said Carstens.

Mahlagaume Dinkwanyane of Limpopo, first year Bachelor of Science actuarial science student, said: "Thanks to FNB, this is my opportunity to study at university. I am looking forward to going, though it's a long road ahead."
