Flies lead police to body

Riot Hlatshwayo

Riot Hlatshwayo

Police nearly abandoned the exhumation of the body of a woman who had been killed and buried on the property of the suspect's brother.

This emerged at the bail application on Monday in the Mhala magistrates' court in Thulamahashe near Bushbuckridge by Mandla Mathebula, 22, who has been charged with the kidnapping and murder of Advice Mashaba.

Police told the court that the grave was so deep that despite a police dog having identified the site, they had been about to stop digging when the presence of flies indicated that they were close to the body.

Magistrate Sam Nkuna said police needed to continue their investigation and remanded Mathebula into custody until his next appearance on February 12.
