Distance learning is an option for older students

The increased focus on the importance of education and vital skills required in the run-up to the 2010 Soccer World Cup has resulted in a considerable surge in adults enrolling to obtain their matric certification.

The increased focus on the importance of education and vital skills required in the run-up to the 2010 Soccer World Cup has resulted in a considerable surge in adults enrolling to obtain their matric certification.

This was strongly in evidence at Intec college, the country's oldest distance learning institution.

It saw an estimated 15percent increase in adult students registered for its grade 12 programme to 6400 last year.

Alrine Rodgers, business manager of high school qualifications at Intec College, said Intec now boasts South Africa's largest matric class - 8000 students a year, of which 6400 are older than 18.

Many older matrics choose distance learning because it allows them to continue to be economically active. Rodgers said a matric certificate opens a door to tertiary education.
