Atletico fined for racist behaviour

MADRID - Atletico Madrid have been fined for the racist behaviour of their fans towards Osasuna's Cameroonian striker Pierre Webo.

MADRID - Atletico Madrid have been fined for the racist behaviour of their fans towards Osasuna's Cameroonian striker Pierre Webo.

The Spanish Football Federation, which did not disclose the amount of the fine, also warned Atletico that the Vicente Calderon Stadium would be closed if it happened again.

The incident occurred during Saturday's highly charged 1-0 league win over Osasuna, which saw four players from the visiting team being sent off. Atletico supporters made monkey noises at Webo in the first half.

Referee Vicente Lizondo Cortes also reported that one of his assistants was hit by two batteries thrown from the crowd. Other projectiles were hurled onto the field.

Atletico have been fined in the past for racist taunting of players, including Real Madrid's Brazilian left-back Roberto Carlos, Espanyol's Cameroonian goalkeeper Carlos Kameni and Mali midfielder Mohamed Sissoko, then of Valencia.

Last week, Real Madrid were also fined an undisclosed amount and warned their home stadium could be closed. Supporters showered the field with projectiles, hitting an assistant referee, in a Spanish Cup match against Real Betis. - BBC
