Alice Kutu, 59, of Katlehong, sang, danced and praised God in celebration of a dream come true when she received the keys to her first real home this week.

Kutu has lived in a shack for more than 25 years.

"Now I have my own piece of Eden because of what God has done for me," said an elated Kutu, moments after cutting a red ribbon on the front door of her new home.

Kutu's dream was fulfilled through the efforts of a dedicated team of people and organisations from diverse backgrounds.

Spoor & Fisher, a firm of attorneys in Pretoria, provided the building materials for the house. Seventy-five employees of the firm built the house in five days, working over two weekends, with guidance and supervision from Habitat for Humanity, an international organisation that operates in 100 countries, and the Katlehong and South Vosloorus Self Help Housing (Kavosh) organisation.

Mark Kemp, of Spoor & Fisher, said the project was part of the firm's mission of "building communities, one house at a time".

The firm has ensured that Kutu, her daughter and her grandchildren will settle comfortably and safely in their new home. The staff also handed over furniture, household appliances and clothes. Spoor & Fisher will also foot the bill for plastering, plumbing, the installation of bathroom amenities and security bars on the doors and windows.

"I thank God for what He has done for me by sending people like those from Spoor & Fisher, Kavosh and Habitat for Humanity.

"I pray they will also do for other people what they have done for me.

"We're all moving in today," said an elated Kutu.

Nonceba Mnqumeni, Kavosh's project leader, said Kutu's home was the 18th that the organisation had built.
