The Pan Africanist Youth Congress in Limpopo wants a township's streets to be renamed after struggle heroes.

The PAC claims that renaming the streets of Praktiseer township in Sekhukhuni would help the emergency services to find residential addresses.

A recent spate of robberies in the township has made it a crime hot spot. It has been alleged that several people in the area have died because the police, struggling to find an address, were late on the scene.

PAC provincial spokesman , Thomo Nkgadima, said new street names would help in the fight against crime.

Street names that have been suggested include Robert Sobukwe, Japhter Masemola and Zeph Mothopeng.

But sources said ANC councillors wanted streets to be named only after ANC heroes .

Ashila Leshaba, the ANC's chief whip in Sekhukhuni, refused to comment. Municipal manager Steven Malepeng said he would investigate the proposal and report back on it.
