The lives of patients at Madadeni Hospital in Newcastle, KwaZulu- Natal, were under threat this week when the hospital experienced two power failures and its back-up generators apparently failed to operate.

Hospital sources have alleged that the electricity cuts were followed by water cuts and that hospital management failed to provide reasons for the disruption.

Patients said this was not the first time that the hospital had been without electricity.

But Leon Mbangwa, spokes- man for the provincial Health Department, denied that there had been delays at the hospital.

"According to our records no such incidents have taken place.

"There are plans in place in our hospitals to cater for emergencies that might arise," he said.

Mbangwa said it was normal procedure for hospitals to use service generators as a back-up system and that it was not true that the generators had failed to perform during emergencies.
