How do we tell when a car is stunning or gorgeous?

It is a tricky question, but through its different styling Alfa Romeo has defined the meaning of gorgeous in cars.

This Italian manufacturer knows how to design a car that attracts onlookers.

I agree that Alfa has never been a popular brand in South Africa, but let us give credit where it's due. Alfa is among the greatest when it comes to design.

This is confirmed by the new Spider.

Launched in Cape Town last week, the new Alfa Romeo Spider is as fabulous as its siblings.

Developed by Pininfarina in conjunction with the Alfa Romeo style centre, the model turns heads for its unmistakable Italian elegance and absolute style. The front-end is compatible with the latest generation of Alfa Romeos. Just looking at it takes your breath away.

The car's penetrating lines invite the eye to run over the entire length of its clean-cut perimeter.

The side is made more dynamic by the concave surface that runs across it. Brawny wheel arches express the car's sporty vocation while maintaining its stylistic elegance and lightness. The rear is made lighter by fins and the round view of the boot and bumpers.

From the side, the combination of a long bonnet and compact, rear-mounted cabin enhance the car's dynamic, sporty looks, underlined by the elongated rear lights and four exhaust terminals.

The new Spider is fitted with anti-lock brake system and electronic brake force distribution to ensure maximum braking in an emergency.

ESP, electronic stability programme, called VDC, vehicle dynamic control, is also one of the safety features. This system cuts in under extreme conditions when car stability is at risk and helps the driver to control the car.

Pricing:

Spider 3,2 V6 Q4 - R525000

Spider 2,2 JTS - R435000
