The Students' Representative Council (SRC) at the Durban University of Technology will dig deep into its pockets to fund students who cannot return to campus because they can't afford the R2000 registration fee.
This comes after the university's management stood firm on its decision to increase the yearly registration fee from R1700 to R2000.
SRC president Thami Shezi said the council met the management of the university on Friday to negotiate a lower registration fee.
"Management has insisted that the increase was not negotiable. We therefore decided to put up R250000 from our budget to help those who really cannot afford to pay the registration fee."
A university spokesman, Raylene Captain-Hasthibeer, said: "The university believes that the fee increase in 2007 is fair.
"This year we have had to make an adjustment [because of inflation]." - Sne Masuku
