The Mpumalanga Athletics Association (MPA) says it is ready to host a successful first leg of the Athletics South Africa Challenge series.

The eagerly anticipated track and field meet will be held at Secunda Stadium on Friday.

Ben Makula, MPA president, said: "Everything has been worked out, including the field and running track where the races will be held.

"We are waiting for the athletes to descend in large numbers, since this is one of the major meets in the country."

The event will be officially launched with a gala dinner at the stadium on Thursday at 6pm.

"Mpumalanga Premier Thabang Makwetla and Nomsa Mtsweni, the MEC for arts, sports, culture and recreation, are among our dignitaries who will grace the gala dinner," said Makula.

An array of top South African athletes is expected to take part in the meet, including Hendrick Ramaala and Mbulaeni Mulaudzi. The entry fee will be R20 for the sheltered pavilion and R10 for the open stands.
