Convicted fraudster Tony Yengeni could be sent back to jail if found guilty of cruelty, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) said yesterday.

Convicted fraudster Tony Yengeni could be sent back to jail if found guilty of cruelty, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) said yesterday.

During his home-coming celebrations at the weekend, Yengeni allegedly stabbed a bull with a spear before it was slaughtered.

SPCA spokesman Andries Venter said: "If these allegations are true, then this is definitely a criminal offence under the Animal Protection Act.

"For this kind of an offence a court could sentence a guilty person to up to 12 months imprisonment," he said.

The offence carried a maximum fine of R200000.

Yengeni was convicted of fraud in 2004. He was released last week after serving four months of his four-year sentence. The bull and two sheep were slaughtered on Friday as part of a " cleansing ceremony". - Sapa
