Tutu slams abuse vote

Nobel laureate Desmond Tutu has expressed his deep disappointment at South Africa's vote to block a UN Security Council resolution demanding an end to human rights abuses in Myanmar.

Nobel laureate Desmond Tutu has expressed his deep disappointment at South Africa's vote to block a UN Security Council resolution demanding an end to human rights abuses in Myanmar.

The retired South African archbishop had urged the security council to take action against the military regime of the southeast Asian country, formerly known as Burma, in a 2005 report written with fellow Nobel laureate and former Czech President Vaclav Havel.

"I am deeply disappointed by our vote. It is a betrayal of our own noble past. Many in the international community can hardly believe it," Tutu said at the weekend. - Sapa-AP
