Pupils in Kokstad, southern KwaZulu-Natal, have appealed to the Back to School Campaign for better school transport facilities.

The area has high levels of poverty and in some cases children have to travel as much as 50km a day to school and back. A number of children even have to cross swollen rivers or travel through dangerous forests putting their lives in danger.

In December a student was stranded for two days on a sand bank in the middle of an overflowing river after his horse could not make it across. - Kamva Mokoena
