DOHA - The South African Under-23s got the sixth Qatar Youth Tournament off to a perfect start, beating Japan 1-0 in Doha last night.

In-form Sibusiso Hadebe scored the only goal of the match after a cross from Stanton Lewis in the fourth minute.

South Africa must thank goalie Itumeleng Khune, who made dramatic saves to deny the more fancied Japan a goal. The South Africans are billed against another problematic opponent, United Arab Emirates, in their next fixture tomorrow. UAE drew 1-all draw with hosts Qatar.

l Manchester United lost 2-1 to Arsenal after leading 1-0 yesterday.
