Young mom up for infanticide

A young woman who gave birth behind her mother's house and allegedly strangled the baby will appear in court today on a murder charge.

The 19-year-old from Mpumalanga was arrested earlier this month after her mother found the baby wrapped in a plastic bag.

The suspect's mother heard a baby's cries from behind her house and found the infant wrapped in a plastic bag hidden in a pile of wood.

The baby, who allegedly had finger marks on its neck, was taken to hospital where she died.

The police were called and the woman was arrested. She is in custody.

l A 20-year-old from Madras, near Hazyview, will appear in court on February 9 on a charge of killing her two-week-old baby and burying her in a shallow grave.
