The death of Elvis Velaphi Mavuso, the senior communications manager of Limpopo's Department of Public Works, has left his community in deep shock.
The charismatic Mavuso, 43, was killed in a car accident in Polokwane on Saturday.
The youngest of five children, Mavuso joined the ANC after completing matric. He worked hard to keep the party alive in Namakgale township, near Phalaborwa, where his family lived.
Mavuso qualified as a teacher in 1991 and taught at schools in the area. He was involved in the South African Democratic Teachers Union.
The hardworking Mavuso was secretary and later chairman of the BaPhalaborwa branch of the ANC.
In 2000 he was elected chief whip of the BaPhalaborwa municipality and a year later was appointed media liaison officer for the Public Works Department.
His sister, Connie Malatji, said her brother was a family person.
"He had a unique personality. We all relied on him a lot and he was always there for us. Even our neighbours knew that. He loved to party, and his soccer team was Orlando Pirates,'' said Malatji.
Willie Mokwalakwala, Cosatu chairman, said Mavuso was a principled cadre who had fought hard to eradicate poverty and underdevelopment.
"There are lots of valuable lessons we can learn from Mavuso. He respected the leadership and for that we will miss him dearly."
Mavuso is survived by his wife, seven children, his mother and three siblings.
He will be buried at Namakgale Cemetery in Phalaborwa tomorrow. The service starts at Namakgale Stadium at 10am.
