A 26-year-old man accused of raping and murdering a woman last year appeared in the Mdantsane regional court yesterday.

Mvulakazi Mgatyelwa's body was found on the morning of October 29.

Her face was extremely swollen, the eyes had almost been gouged out and her lower lip had ben cut off.

It is alleged that on the night of the murder the accused, Lwazi Ndaliso, was drinking in the same shebeen as the 46-year-old Mgatyelwa.

They were reportedly not drinking together.

The owner of the shebeen told police that Mgatyelwa had consumed a lot of alcohol.

Mgatyelwa, who was described by local people as a respectable woman, was a cook at Mdantsane Prison.

She was said to have been on her way home from the shebeen when Ndaliso offered to escort her.

Mgatyelwa accepted the offer, though the owner of the shebeen said she warned Mgatyelwa against doing so, and the two left together.

The shebeen owner is said to have warned Ndaliso that if anything were to happen to Mgatyelwa she would hold him responsible.

The next morning Mgatyelwa's naked body was found by a passerby, Lindile Mazomba.

Police launched an investigation during which they found blood stains on Ndaliso's trousers.

Ndaliso was arrested in Beacon Bay in East London, where he was working.

The killing has caused anger in the community.

Community members have sent a petition to the prosecutor demanding that Ndaliso be denied bail.

The residents vowed that "something would happen to him" if Ndaliso were to set foot in the area again.

The case was postponed to February 2 for further police investigation.
