Mohammed Husain, the society's president, said yesterday: "We are appalled by this incident of senseless brutality; the conduct of the police officials involved is reprehensible and must be condemned."
Plainclothes police officers in Sunnyside, Pretoria, have been accused of brutally assaulting the girl, a prostitute, on Tuesday night, then turning their attention to a Pretoria News photographer taking pictures of them. The 17-year-old had an apparent epileptic fit and was seen being carried away unconscious on a stretcher by paramedics.
She reportedly later discharged herself from the Pretoria Academic Hospital and has since disappeared.
Police were trying to find her to take her statement for the investigation into the alleged police misconduct.
"Should the victim wish to pursue legal action against the police official involved, we will make an attorney available to her free of charge," Husain said.
"Conduct of this nature is not only a flagrant violation of the victim's rights, but it also undermines the rule of law," he said. - Sapa
