The National Taxi Alliance has squashed claims that it would embark on a national five-day strike next week.

The alliance was responding to a newspaper report that it would go on a strike that would leave taxi commuters in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria stranded.

NTA spokesman Gerald Ferror said the reports were "premature", but confirmed that the alliance was planning on taking "action against the government".

Ferror said the alliance had not yet been given a mandate to strike.
