The policeman who beat the prostitute into a coma on Monday allegedly harasses the women regularly.

It is alleged that the policeman arrives with friends wearing private clothes and drives his own car. When he finds the women standing on the streets, he arrests them or makes them pay a spot fine of R1500.

Melanie, a prostitute, said: "I threatened to testify against the policeman who assaulted our colleague [the badly injured woman] and he let us out of the van.

"I can't stop thinking about him. He started pushing us into the van, but the victim refused. He sprayed her with teargas and started to punch her and smash her head against the van's door.

"The woman cop convinced her to come out from under the van and when she did, he kicked her and then picked her up and began to strangle her and I saw white stuff come out of her mouth."

The victim lost consciousness after the paramedics carried her small body to an ambulance with her blue sandals and pink handbag wedged beneath her feet.
